Traditional boats in Maldives

Bokkura - A very small row boat maximum 4 persons to board, mainly used to fish near the shores and lagoons.

And is also used by fishermen and others for transporting fish, their belongings and goods between anchored boats and shores if they don’t have a jetty on the Island.

Before the introduction of out board engines people use oars to move it.

Now lots of them use 2-5 HP out board engines in their Bokkura.

Vadhu Dhoni -A small boat bigger than Bokkura, with engine or lateen sails, mainly used for fishing in Maldives.

Our ancestors built these boats using coconut palm timber but now people use imported timbers.

This is an ideal boat for night fishing because the expenses are much lower than modern boat. And it can travel in much shallow water.

Traditionally only lateen sails are used but now some of the fishermen use both engines and lateen sails together so that oil consumption is reduced.

Although a little expense is reduced, using both engines and lateen sails, most of the fishermen now use only engines because it takes a lot of time handling the lateen sails.
